When the public had less media to distract it, magazines were a primary form of entertainment, photography was not yet sophisticated enough to accomplish what illustration could, and people scrutinized illustration and illustrators more closely than we do today.

People clipped magazines and kept scrap books of their favourite illustrators' work - a practice that goes back at least as far as Charles Dana Gibson's "Gibson Girls". As recently as this past decade Will Davies showed me a fan letter from an elderly lady who tore the covers off her Harlequin Romance books whenever they were illustrated by Will and glued them into a Will Davies scrap book she kept.

I have many examples where illustrators from the 50's were used as endorsers of products, were written up in major articles, and were asked to lend their opinion to various topics, all because they were known by the public and respected as authorities on esthetics.leifpenghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07232334860061949895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18907156.post-1135830505994466952005-12-28T23:28:00.000-05:002005-12-28T23:28:00.000-05:00I think you're right, which is why this post is so...I think you're right, which is why this post is so weird and cool to see!
How many times have I been asked when I mentioned that I do illustration for newspapers: "You mean, like policital cartoons?"
Lots! The public is blissfully unaware of where visual media originates and perhaps know one name in all of the history of illustration: Norman Rockwell.leifpenghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07232334860061949895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18907156.post-1135197061182117602005-12-21T15:31:00.000-05:002005-12-21T15:31:00.000-05:00Gross gift designs! Do you think today designers are more famoust than illustrators? Actually Bruce Mau is the only one I can think of that may be considered a celebrity. hmmm.Kagan M.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09287744584724971942noreply@blogger.com
