In the late 50's, acrylics had yet been discovered as a painting medium, oils were considered too slow drying for the quick deadlines, and somewhat passe' in the avant-garde illustration market, but gouache dried fast, could be used either transparent or opaque, but unlike oils, gouache was a real bear to adjust and correct, and it dried lighter. That drove us crazy, trying to master the medium. Of course, Bob Foster mastered all the mediums. It was magic to watch him demonstrate with gouache.
