One of the finest of the Cooper Studio artists, and a regular of the boy/girl illustrators in all the major magazines, especially in the second half of the 50's, was Joe Bowler. Leif, I had no idea that Joe Bowler was still working, let alone painting for a gallery. How clever of you to track him down. Of all the artists in the Cooper stable, he and de Mers were my favorites. Their work always had a lot of integrity. When young Bernie Fuchs was in art school, his teacher brought in an original Bowler illustration to show the class. Fuchs was really struck by Bowler's work, and made it a personal goal to be able to paint like that someday.
ReplyDeleteI always think of the two Joes - Bowler and De Mers - in the same way, David. I know there are members of the TI list who have met and actually been taught by Joe Bowler... perhaps they will share some of their recollections with the group.
ReplyDeleteAs an artist, I can truly appreciate Joe Bowlee's works. I loved his watercolor graphics in 1970's "Scrooge" movie!
