Baumgartner must have been particularly pleased to receive this assignment. In his book Illustrator in America, Walt Reed tell us that Baumgartner had a life-long love of fishing.
Like many of Reader's Digest's cover artists, Baumgartner was an accomplished water colourist. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the American watercolour Society, the National Academy of Design and the Salmagundi Club of New York.
Love the colors. It's a nice decision to allow that green to dominate, and it really makes for a nice magazine cover, too.
ReplyDeleteI'll have more work by Baumgartner to show you in the near future, tom!
ReplyDeleteThat magazine used to have great articles, I remember reading Reader's, my dad used to have a lot of them from 1930's or so, I did not care about TV.
