Who was Alex Ross?

In Illustrator in America, Walt Reed tells us that Alex Ross was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1909. He came to America at age three and aside from two years of night classes at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Ross was a self-taught artist.

He worked first at the Rayart Studios, then the Pitt Studios, and finally joined the prestigious Cooper Studios in the early 1940's.

  2. You are not being weird, anonymous. The popularity of the current Alex Ross has pretty much wiped out what tiny presence the first Alex Ross might have had on the internet. Its impossible to search for info without hitting a ton of the current Alex Ross' images.

Even askart.com has only a listing for the current Alex Ross. A shame that the original guy is all but forgotten. He did beautiful work.

  3. I wish that there was more information on the Alex Ross of the "Buster Brown" and other advertisement fame. Like you said, all that comes up is the current Alex Ross, phenonemal artist that he is, when looking on-line. I am a Scottish "Ross" and was trying to get information for the Clan on other famous Rosses. I chose Alex Ross with no luck. It is too bad. He really is a great, but forgotten, artist.
