These are ok.Nothing more, there were many British illustrators as good as this or better.

  3. Graham; I'm sure that's true - but its not a contest. We're just trying to bring some good work by a forgotten artist to the attention of those who likely have never seen it.

Actually, your comment just seems to reinforce everything that was discussed the week before last about Robert Weaver. Art is so subjective, isn't it? Other commenters have been wowed by Rose's work while to you it "ok - nothing more." Interesting...

  4. I'm going to disagree as well. His composition and whimsical line work lead you through the painting, while the use of muted colors with a few bright, saturated areas tell the viewer where to stop.

  5. There is enough visual interest and distinct personality in his characters and compositions to warrant multiple viewings. Something that is a necessity particularly in childrens' book illustrations.

  6. Wow, I love this illustrator. Amazing economy of line, beautiful compositions, thorough knowledge of perspective (unfortunately not anything to take for granted these days, and rare among the more "cartoony" illustrators), appealing figures, and a spontaneous execution that is deceptively difficult to master. I would love to see more of his work. Thanks Leif!
